Searching for God: One Seeker’s Journey from Tradition to Truth

Growing up in a religious household in Sulawesi, Indonesia, Asman was taught to follow Islam without question. But as he grew older, doubt crept in.

A Heart Longing for Truth

For many, faith is something passed down through generations—a set of traditions to follow without question. But for Asman, faith could not be inherited; it had to be understood. He yearned for a deeper connection with God, built on personal knowledge rather than religious tradition.

His heart was restless. Though raised in Islam, he confessed, “So far, my relationship with God feels uncertain because I haven’t truly come to know Him.” His faith was not something he had chosen; it was simply the path given to him by his family. But deep within, he wrestled with an important question: “How can I truly see God?”

In his search for answers, Asman turned to the internet and found a Facebook ad from Global Media Outreach titled “True Love.” He reached out, hoping someone could help guide him toward the truth.

The Weight of Inherited Faith

Growing up in a religious household in Sulawesi, Indonesia, Asman was taught to follow Islam without question. But as he grew older, doubt crept in. “I have studied Islam, but what I encountered felt like empty testimonies,” he admitted. Though he acknowledged the Creator’s existence, he struggled with the idea of knowing God personally.

His culture and community discouraged him from questioning his faith. In Indonesia, those who inquire about Christianity often face immense pressure, even intimidation. Many, like Asman, seek answers in secrecy—torn between their longing for truth and the fear of consequences.

Encountering a Different Perspective

When Asman connected with a Global Media Outreach volunteer named Lian, he candidly shared his doubts. “I need a teacher who can guide me to know God,” he said.

Lian responded with warmth, inviting an open discussion about faith. Asman was deeply thoughtful, challenging the idea of belief without evidence. “If it’s just about believing, even a child can believe. But we are adults—should we just believe without deeper understanding?”

Lian saw this as an opportunity to share a personal testimony—one that revealed the power of a real relationship with God.

Seeking Answers: A Journey Toward Christ

Lian shared how she had once followed Christianity without truly knowing God. She spoke of a time when despair had overtaken her, and in the depths of sorrow, she cried out to God. “In that moment, I heard a gentle voice—a voice I truly believe was God’s—saying, ‘You are precious in My sight, and I love you.’”

Her story resonated, but Asman remained cautious. “Until now, I have wanted to know the true God, but I haven’t found the answer yet. However, for you who have already experienced this, I hope you hold onto your faith sincerely. As for me, I am still searching.”

Despite his hesitation, he took a small but significant step—he shared his phone number, allowing a local ministry partner to continue the conversation.

The Impact of Digital Ministry

For the volunteer, Asman’s journey was a reminder of the power of digital evangelism. “Many people like Asman are searching for the true God but have nowhere to turn. The internet allows them to ask questions safely, without fear of judgment. We must be patient, knowing that our role is to plant seeds, but it is the Holy Spirit who brings conviction.”

Though Asman later stopped responding, his willingness to seek truth remains a sign that God is working in his heart. As Jesus said in Matthew 7:7, “Seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.”

A Story Still Being Written

Asman’s story is far from over. He is still searching, still questioning, still longing. But the fact that he dared to ask—despite cultural pressure and personal uncertainty—shows that God is already drawing him closer.

Let this be an encouragement if you are reaching out to people in your life who are on a similar journey: Someone’s doubts do not disqualify them from knowing God. He welcomes those who seek Him with open hearts.
