Is It Worth It?

athletes

What happens when you have planned, trained, and anticipated one of the greatest moments in your life only to have it taken away? How do you deal with the loss of what could have been?

Each of us can think of a time when we faced great disappointment. That’s why, during the weeks of the global games, we are running several campaigns to reach the world with the hope of Jesus, sharing the struggles and faith stories of three world-class athletes.

Through our partnership with Athletes in Action, Facebook and Google ad campaigns will run throughout the global games, highlighting three amazing athletes, their testimonies, and how their relationships with Christ have helped them overcome their struggles, setbacks, and disappointments. Here’s a glimpse into each of their faith journeys:

Elite Brazilian basketball player and 2023 4th overall pick in the WNBA Draft, Stephanie Soares, experienced a career-halting injury. Through her videos, she shares her emotional journey and the pain of being sidelined, which caused her to question her future in the sport she loves.

Stephanie’s story will be shared with people receiving the ad, as will the stories of Stevan Micic, a world-class professional wrestler, and Annette Echikunwoke, a 2022 World Champion finalist hammer thrower.

Stevan recalls, “A few weeks before I wrestled in the [2020] Olympic Games, I felt myself getting sick. Something that I had dreamt about my whole life, being like one of the best moments, ended up being probably the worst moment. I’m trying to win and I’m trying to give my best, but if I don’t, [I know] everything is going to be okay afterwards. You know, I know that my family loves me; God loves me. I would say the good news about Jesus is that He’s always there for you, whether things are going good or things are going bad. He’s never going to forsake us.”

Despite the disappointing loss, Stevan continued to believe God’s plan and proceeded with training. Now, he is back for this summer’s 2024 global games, as is Annette Echikunwoke!

Annette explains, “I went to the [2020] Olympics expecting to compete but was disqualified due to administrative error. All of the hard days and telling myself, like the heavy lifts and the thousands of reps, I questioned whether it was worth continuing. Getting to know Jesus was a turning point in my life.”

Training for the World Games and overcoming life’s difficulties share several key similarities. Both require dedication, perseverance, and a strong mental attitude. That’s why we decided to make these global games our mission field. Last year, we ran a similar campaign during the World Cup soccer games and saw amazing results. During this summer’s World Games, we are expecting even better results!

As the book of Hebrews explains, we are to run well the race set before us. It instructs us to set aside any sin that weighs us down so that our lives are pleasing to God because sin separates us from Him. As these world-class athletes compete on the world stage, they use their gifts to share Jesus with million of people.

Campaigns like this require a great deal of planning, partnership and time. Without the consistent prayers and support of our giving partners, we would not be able to do what we do. That’s why we cherish each of you, our amazing partners. You enable us to run well the race set before us. Will you help us to cross the finish line strong this summer with a special gift to support this global campaign?
