Living Through Fear

The words were barely out of the doctor’s mouth before Michael, a young, seemingly healthy man from Ohio, had a flood of dread fall over him.

It was the diagnosis no one wanted to hear. Michael loosened his tie, feeling choked as he left the doctor’s office in a daze. The words “Cystic fibrosis.” seemed to reverberate off the office walls. Michael didn’t feel that sick. He was a young, seemingly healthy man. As he tried to steady himself, the thoughts raced through his head. “How will I be able to live a normal life? When will I die? What does all this mean?” Most people diagnosed with the disease, including Michael’s mother, died before the age of 50. Since that day in the doctor’s office, Michael has had to deal with expensive medications to treat his many symptoms and the daily fears and anxieties that can come with his fatal diagnosis. Yet, he hasn’t lost hope. Being faced with his mortality so early in life led Michael on a frantic journey to seek out answers to life’s biggest spiritual questions. As he searched the Internet for answers to why there is suffering, Michael came across a Global Media Outreach Gospel presentation. It was then that he realized his deep need for God. Michael decided to submit a question, and soon after, a volunteer Online Missionary (OM) responded. After only a few times, Michael felt so safe talking to his OM, Steve, that he brought him one of life’s biggest questions.

“HOW CAN I BE SURE I AM SAVED? THERE’S A VOICE THAT KEEPS SAYING, HAVE YOU REALLY BEEN SAVED BY GOD? IT JUST SEEMS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. I’M STARTING TO QUESTION MY SALVATION. I THINK YOU’RE THE ONLY PERSON I CAN COME TO STEVE. I HOPE YOU CAN HELP ME OUT.”
— Michael
Since Michael had been raised in a Christian family, he assumed he was a Christian, but as Steve explained the Gospel thoroughly to him, Michael realized he had never put his complete faith in Jesus as his Lord. Michael explained, “After reading what you had to say, I concluded that I haven’t accepted Jesus and allowed Him to save me and bring me closer to God so that I can have the life a true Christian should have.”

“TODAY, I TRULY ACCEPTED JESUS AS MY SAVIOR AND THE LORD OF EVERYTHING IN MY LIFE. I PRAYED JESUS WOULD HELP ME GET MY LIFE BACK ON THE PATH TO GOD AND FILL ME WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.”
— Michael
This true acceptance of Christ started an undeniable fire in Michael that led him to become an Online Missionary with Global Media Outreach, a seminary student, and eventually a pastor of his local church. Now, he shepherds many to faith in Christ. While the number of days in Michael’s life are uncertain, he has the assurance that God has written his name in the Book of Life!

“IT JUST SEEMS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE THAT GOD IS JUST SO FORGIVING.”
— Michael
