The Gospel Prevailing In China

Images of churches being torn down and crosses being set ablaze paint a grim picture of the religious landscape across communist China. Persecution of Christians has reached such a critical level that even Scripture is being rewritten by the government to establish a ‘correct understanding’ of the Bible. Recent reports find that things are worsening as this heightened wave of anti-Christianity metastasizes across the nation.

Over the past year, local authorities have shut down several house churches, forcing congregations to hang the Chinese flag and sing patriotic songs instead of gathering for their regular church service. If not currently detained by government officials, prominent church leaders are in hiding.

One of those leaders is the senior pastor of Early Rain Covenant Church – one of the largest protestant churches in China – who was arrested for ‘inciting subversion of state power’ in December 2018 and now faces up to 15 years in prison.

Within 48 hours of his disappearance, the church released a letter he wrote months before his apprehension in which he stated, “Jesus is the Christ, son of the eternal, living God. He died for sinners and rose to life for us. He is my king and the king of the whole earth yesterday, today, and forever. I am his servant, and I am imprisoned because of this. I will resist in meekness those who resist God, and I will joyfully violate all laws that violate God’s laws...For the mission of the church is only to be the church …[and] all acts of the church are attempts to prove to the world the real existence of another world.”

It’s in that same spirit of meekness and joyful resistance that Global Media Outreach infiltrated China more than 5 million times with the Gospel in 2018. More than 200,000 people received Him as their Savior in that year alone – even with rigorous online restrictions imposed by the government.

The tireless effort to reach closed countries like China does not occur in vain. The Lord continues to show us that no earthly power can stop His sovereignty, and your support continues to fuel initiatives to keep the unfiltered and unfailing message of the Gospel alive.

The persecution of the body of Christ is just an early sign that the coming of the Lord is soon approaching. Though we rejoice that we will meet our Savior soon, we also hurt for those who still need His salvation.

Join us in fighting back against the oppression many Christians experience in countries like China by making your best gift today. Everything you give will be put towards sharing the Gospel with those who need it most.
